An ebook reader, or e-reader, is a type of device used to read e-books and digital files such as PDFs. Since Amazon launched the Kindle in the USA in 2008 there has been much interest in this area and many view these as a real alternative to carrying physical books around. One e-book reader device can carry literally thousands of books in its memory!

As well as their portability and capacity, they have an increasingly long battery life and the newer displays are designed to mimic real type so that reading from an ebook reader is just like reading from the page of a book. In this site I hope to help you find the best ebook reader for your needs.

The latest news is that Apple is rumored to be working on an e-book reader too. There have been reports of Apple receiving 10? touch screens from Wintek who already manufacture screens for the iPod and iTouch devices. Apple already has software to view e-books for the iPhone and iPod Touch so this might be the next step in their device domination plans.

It’s great when you can sit down, relax, take your favorite book and just start reading. Those are probably some of the best moments of my life. The problem is when you want to take a few books with you and don’t want to carry a hundred pounds of books around. That weight could really hurt your back. What do you do then? Well, that’s when your e-book reader comes in handy.

What Is An Ebook Reader?

The theory behind an e-book reader is quite simple. It’s a solution for you to take with you that will contain all of your ebooks in one place. In case you don’t know, an ebook is a file that you can open on any computer and it’s just like a book. But, you can read directly on your computer screen. So you can take that electronic book, put it into your e-book reader and you’ll be able to access it any time you want. There is no longer the need to lug around a bag full of books that you want to read.

What If I don’t Like To Read On The Screen?

Don’t worry. Even if reading off the screen is not your favorite thing, a good e-book reader will do wonders for you. See, ebook readers are made in such a way that when you look at them, they actually imitate paper, so even though you’re reading a screen, your mind and your eyes think that you’re reading paper. This causes your eyes to relax more and not be tired.

How Many Books Can This Hold?

Well, this is a tricky question to answer. It’s difficult to say how many books an e-book reader holds without knowing the exact model and brand of the reader. See, the thing is that depending on who made the device it can store from a few dozen books up to literally hundreds of thousands. Can you imagine that?

Ok, Where Should I Buy One?

Again, this depends on where you live and what exactly you need. You can certainly go to google and mess around there. I am sure you’ll find something good for yourself. If not, you can go to Amazon.com which actually sells their own e-book reader called Kindle. It happens to be one of the best e-book readers on the market, so it’ll do you good to check it out.

The one thing you have to know before we part is that e-book readers are not cheap. E-book readers can cost anywhere between $300 – $600, but if you like to read, they are definitely worth it.

They will be an investment you won’t regret. Just imagine being able to take any books you want with you on your next hiking trip without having to think twice about your back or how bulky your backpack is. It’s freedom from the pain and worry. That freedom definitely more than worth it.

The eBook Reader, an electronic device that can easily be carried by an individual like a traditional book, is an integral part of the trend towards eBook technology. The reader is typically smaller than a paperback book and reads any documents that you might normally read from a computer such as PDF files or word documents. Some of the most common types of ebook reader that you will come across are the Kindle by Amazon and the Sony Reader.

More than 88,000 books–generally $10 each–are available in the Kindle store, including most of the current New York Times best-sellers and new releases. The Kindle uses an EvDO network and, where available, 3G connectivity. Other hardware devices such as PDAs and smart phones may allow eBooks to be read but their screen is generally not optimised to allow the best eBook reading experience.

And it is precisely because reading from a computer screen is difficult to do for a long period of time that there is a market for E-book Readers. They supply something that is in demand. And many are embracing it because of positive aspects such as the saving on printed material. And e-books are increasingly easy to get hold of. Project Gutenberg (PG) collects and maintains a library of public domain books in electronic text format, in an assortment of languages.

And the e-book trend is set to continue with Apple purportedly working on an eBook reader . I have hopes for that, in that if it’s a 6″x9″ creature with an iPhone like interface, I could see a genuine use for it. Authors will be attracted to its ability to display a wide variety of eBook formats. Another big player in the ebook reader market is the BeBook which is capable of reading a wide range of digital document formats: pdf, mobi, lit, epub, html, doc, fb2, txt, ppt, prc, rtf, jpg, mp3 files and many more. It features a 6-inch reflective screen, an SD card slot, 512MB of internal storage and a USB connector and weighs just 220 grams (less than 8oz) including the battery.

With regards to features and options, look at each ebook reader to see which one fits your needs. Some PDAs allow you to read ebooks, but their screens are tiny. These days you can click a few buttons and have the exact book you want delivered to your computer or ebook reader instantly. That kind of service just can’t be beaten and the Kindle even allows you to subscribe to newspapers and magazines on a daily basis as well as buy “traditional” e-books. And many iPhone users are discovering eBooks. Perhaps when they learn the difference they will demand that developers bring readers up to speed.

And e-book product development is continuing to grow fast. The Kindle covers come with the features such as great color, sleek design and the use of superior material. These covers are designed specifically to fit your Kindle device and carry it safely. Plastic Logic has just announced that it has partnered with AT&T on its upcoming eBook reader that’s slated to launch in 2010. Said reader will be about the size of a piece of paper and will be less than 0.2 inches thick

And the price of conventional books is going through the roof. Plus, when you are on the go, you can only carry so many books which makes an e-book reader an essential part of a long trip. But most e-book readers still cost more than $300 dollars. Come on manufacturers – if you want to make a really successful product that will really sell in big numbers then make an e-book reader that is feature rich and sell it at WalMart for under $300dollars. That will really change things and shake the book market up completely.

So just as some people prefer audio books, many people prefer e-books and this is a trend that is not going to stop. The publishing world is changing fast and people want their books instantly and devices like the Kindle can supply exactly that instant gratification. And in some self help markets the e-book reader could be a godsend – if you need a cure for a condition (or even need advice on getting a baby to sleep) and just can’t wait till the book shop opens, then e-book readers could be just what you need.

E-book readers are probably the most talked about devices since the introduction of the iPod. Quite simply, e-book readers are revolutionizing the book industry! But e-book readers are in no way eliminating traditional books; they are just updating them for a new generation.

Even in their most basic form, e-book readers are fantastic. They are essentially small, single purpose computers but they are starting to gain momentum and becoming an increasingly popular way for readers to access digital content.

The main advantages of e-book readers are threefold:

Their portability – they are small and lightweight

The ability for the users to search and find specific text or pages quickly

The capacity to store multiple, literally thousands, of books on one device

E-book readers are particularly good for students who need to carry around a lot of textbooks and other reading material. But e-book readers are, at the time of writing, fairly expensive and this is a problem that needs to be solved.

There are many types of device that are said to be e-book readers (even an ipod touch can be used as an e-book reader) but the best available today use a technology called e-paper (electronic paper) and this powers most of the top models such as the Sony Ereader and the Kindle. It’s these improvements in display technology that account for the fact that e-book readers are finally becoming popular and more mass market in their appeal.

Bespoke dedicated e-book readers are interesting, but many believe the future lies in rich, advanced e-books and other publication formats, and the devices which will support them. Amazon’s Kindle book reader even permits the user to instantly access digital books, magazines and news papers through a wireless connection.

But while the environmental advantages of e-book readers are great (no more chopped trees or disappearing rain forests), the cost of being an early adopter is still too high for most people. To lower the entry costs some innovative payment plans are needed (as happened with mobile phone plans and free phones) so perhaps some kind of subscription format is the way forward rather than a large up front cash payment at the moment.

As mentioned before, Sony and Amazon are the market leaders, but other companies such as Be-book are producing interesting devices. Based on many reviews and what’s to come, the Kindle 2 is still the standard to which all e-book readers will be compared and instant wireless connection will be a must if more e-book readers are to continue to take off.

But let’s not forget the flip side of the argument for e-book readers. Whilst e-book readers are potentially a great space-saver, carrying around a fairly fragile, expensive gadget in place of a $10 paperback (which can be sat on, thrown in a bag, and even get a bit wet without any real risk) just will not make any sense for many people. However there are more than enough tech friendly book obsessive’s out there to support this market for a long time to come.
